How to Escape Your Boring Life

Escaping life is difficult.

Let’s talk about your life for a moment.

When you think about it, what comes to mind?

You probably see it as a story, starting with your birth, moving through major milestones, your job, relationships, and future plans — maybe traveling, saving for retirement, or moving abroad.

We all view our lives as a narrative, a linear journey with a beginning, middle, and end.

Reflecting on the past helps us understand the present, and looking ahead gives us something to strive for.

If we’re unhappy now, we hope for a better future.

But living life day-to-day feels different.

We wake up groggy, stumble to the kitchen for coffee, zone out in the shower, and wear the same clothes we’ve worn hundreds of times.

We drive to work through the same traffic, go home exhausted, veg out in front of Netflix, and repeat.

This routine feels pretty normal.

Social media, however, bombards us with highlight reels of yachts, adventures, and exotic foods.

These highlights shape our expectations, making us feel our normal days are suboptimal.

We start thinking our amazing days should be the norm and our regular days are a waste.

Even celebrities like Dwayne Johnson, Kim Kardashian, Tom Brady, and Elon Musk have routines.

They wake up, work hard, deal with frustrations, and experience the same day-to-day monotony we do.

Sure, their vacations might be a bit more extravagant, but fundamentally, they live one day at a time, just like us.

Assuming we get eight hours of sleep each night, we have about 16 hours a day to live.

Life happens in these small segments between waking up and going to bed.

This repetitive cycle can seem either depressing or inspiring, depending on how we look at it.

If we don’t like our 16 hours, it can be depressing.

Many of us feel trapped by bad habits, unfulfilling jobs, or unpleasant situations.

This makes us fantasize about the future and wait to “live our real lives,” which can feel incredibly disheartening.

But here’s the silver lining: changing our life isn’t as monumental as it seems.

Life is lived in these 16-hour mini-episodes, manageable chunks of time that we can perfect.

We can start building habits we enjoy and align our actions with our values.

A good life is just a series of good days.

This doesn’t mean everything goes perfectly, but that our “system” is running smoothly.

We make choices that align with our values and do little things that bring happiness.

Maybe it’s a good conversation with a friend, putting extra effort into a meal, or developing a positive habit.

Viewing life as a series of mini-episodes adds clarity to our daily choices.

Want to be more social? Say yes to that networking event.

Fantasize about being fit? Go to the gym or work out at home.

Miserable at your job? Start saving today to pursue your passion.

Life is today, repeated.

Make today count.
